Detective's passion is writing, singing songsPASCAGOULA - When Detective Matt Hoggatt of the Gautier Police Department is not doing police work or hanging out with his family, he is actively pursuing his passion: songwriting.

Hoggatt started playing guitar and writing songs in 2005, but that was not his first foray into music. Hoggatt has been a musician since he started playing trumpet in seventh grade at Gautier Middle School. He continued to play trumpet in the marching band at Pascagoula High School, and then he picked up the baritone at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College....

Lyric Spotlight 2010When did you begin writing songs? How often do you write these days? What’s your day job? Where do you play your songs for people?

I started writing songs in 2005 a few days after Hurricane Katrina. Ironically, my first song was also about Hurricane Katrina. I still play that song at local bars, clubs and coffee houses where I gig. I try to write a little everyday, but mostly at nighttime. I am a detective at the police department in my hometown during the day and the boss won’t allow guitars in the office...

Matt Hoggatt was born and raised on the Ms Gulf Coast in the heart of "Katrina country" in the small town of Gautier, Ms. Having been a member of marching bands all his life, it was no surprise that Matt enlisted into the U.S Army National Guard band after high school where he served honorably for 7 years.
