PASCAGOULA - When Detective Matt Hoggatt of the Gautier Police Department is not doing police work or hanging out with his family, he is actively pursuing his passion: songwriting.
Hoggatt started playing guitar and writing songs in 2005, but that was not his first foray into music. Hoggatt has been a musician since he started playing trumpet in seventh grade at Gautier Middle School. He continued to play trumpet in the marching band at Pascagoula High School, and then he picked up the baritone at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College....

Musician forms chapter of songwriters group
Musicians usually surround themselves with a variety of tools and equipment — tuners, cords, amplifiers, microphone stands and more. During performances, the focus is on the delivery and the mood.
But a musician’s real work is often done in quiet rooms with a pad and pencil. The song-writing process is an essential piece of the puzzle; one that’s often overlooked.

When did you begin writing songs? How often do you write these days? What’s your day job? Where do you play your songs for people?
I started writing songs in 2005 a few days after Hurricane Katrina. Ironically, my first song was also about Hurricane Katrina. I still play that song at local bars, clubs and coffee houses where I gig. I try to write a little everyday, but mostly at nighttime. I am a detective at the police department in my hometown during the day and the boss won’t allow guitars in the office...

Singer-Songwriter Keeps His Shows Simple, Good

There must be something in the water in Jackson County. The musical contributions that have come out of that sleepy little land are numerous — Jimmy Buffett hails from here, 3 Doors Down calls the area home, and so does Gautier-based singer/songwriter Matt Hoggatt.
